When you're in Iowa vacation rentals, you can also tour the many national historic landmarks here. The Hitchcock House, one mile west of Lewis, is a restored station on the Underground Railroad. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and recognized as a National Park Service Underground Railroad Network to Freedom site, you'll find special exhibits, and also country music events held here. The Amana Colonies are among the most popular vacation destinations in Iowa. They're seven authentic German villages founded as a religious commune 150 years ago. The Colonies also feature authentic arts and crafts. The Fort Des Moines Provisional Army Training School is America's first officer training facility for black soldiers. Graduates from the school in 1917 helped America during the First World War, and are honored here.
