Sunrise Coast itself was named after the fact that the region is the first to glimpse the morning sun. Lobstering, scalloping, and logging are still significant sources of income for Downeast. Ancient customs are still preserved. What's more, while the ancient attracts you, you can go for hiking, fishing, sailing, boating, sea kayaking, whale watching, and other outdoor activities. 

The Downeast area is the hub for one of the most diverse cultural activities in Maine. Music, arts, painting, museums…they all abound making this truly a unique part of the world. Cherryfield, known ironically, as the 'Blueberry Capital of the World,' is a stately village made up of fine old homes and a park along the Narraguagus River. In the historic town of Machias in Downeast, you can visit the Burnham Tavern, where local patriots planned the first naval battle of the American Revolution in 1775. Machias' library features a fireplace built from the stones used for the Margaretta's ballast. The September Festival at the new Downeast Fairgrounds in Whitneyville offers great local food and bluegrass music. In Downeast, the Stanwood Homestead Sanctuary is a spectacular 130-acre nature preserve that shouldn't be missed. And don't miss Lubec while in the area.
