Chatham a graceful town of big old houses and inns, an easy pace, friendly people, and pleasant vistas all around. Visit this place in the Cape Cod Area to look at Chatham Light, the town's beaches, its resort hotels, and its inns full of character. Chatham's collection of restaurants pleases visitors coming for the season, or just for the day. Guests of Massachusetts Vacation Homes will find Chatham an active, bustling place in July, August and parts of September, with lots of traffic and few parking spaces. A day's itinerary in Chatham can include beach combing, fishing, sailing, golf, parasailing, bicycling, hiking, shopping, sight-seeing, and any number of outdoor pursuits.

The first lighthouse was erected on this point of land in 1808. The present lighthouse dates from 1878. The view is pleasant, looking out to sea across Nauset Beach (the sand bar, actually a peninsula, you see out in the water). If you prefer some aquatic activities the beaches around Chatham offer perfect locations Cockle Cove Beach, Ridgevale Beach, and Hardings Beach, located on the Sound, are perfect for families with small children. The calm waves and shallow, gently deepening waters make the beches safe for children. For surfing visit Forest Beach. Five fresh water ponds and lakes in Chatham allow fishing. Goose Pond, one of the msot popular, is also an excellent swimming hole.

The Fish Pier, operated by the town for licensed Chatham fishing boats is a must to see place. Chatham is proud of its fishing fleet of small boats, which the townspeople boast brings in the freshest fish. Go to the pier around 4 pm (no later than 6 pm) to see the fleet come in and unload. You can buy the day's catch right there. You may rent a boat at Fish Pier for a day's hunting for bass, bluefish, and tuna out at sea. Chatham is a particularly good place for watching birds. Monomoy Island, south of the town, has been a National Wildlife Refuge since 1970. Over 300 different species of birds have been spotted on its 7,600 acres.
