About Vacation Rentals in Edgartown

Edgartown in Massachusetts is located on Martha's Vineyard. The origin of the name 'Martha' may lie in the immediate family of Bartholomew Gosnold, the discoverer of the island. Edgartown now offers the tourist pretty much everything one could expect from a place bearing the name of 'Vineyard.' A day can be filled with walking the town's streets, shopping the stylish boutiques, or sampling the excellent local cuisine. Vacationers at Massachusetts Vacation Homes can take part in fishing, swimming, sailing, parasailing, and bicycling. Those who want to escape from it all can sunbathe on one of the many gorgeous island beaches of Martha's Vineyard.

To view and appreciate Edgartown fully, you must walk its streets. North Water Street has a row of captains' houses that provide you the opportunity to study the fanlights and widow's walks by day and stroll down the streets after the lamps are lit. The stately white Greek Revival houses built by the whaling captains have been carefully maintained. History buffs would love to visit the Martha's Vineyard Historical Society Museum, which features historical objects, maritime artifacts and genealogical collections that depict the lives of the area's inhabitants from 10,000 years ago to the present!

Edgartown's oldest inhabitant would be a tree! South Water Street is dominated by a huge pagoda tree brought from China as a seedling by Captain Thomas Milton in the early days of the last century. The house beyond it was that of Captain Valentine Pease, on whose ship Herman Melville made his only whaling voyage. There are excellent public beaches in the township of Edgartown. Norton's Point, known as South Beach or Katama, is a barrier beach providing surf bathing and the opportunity to explore Katama Bay on the other side of the dunes. Outdoor enthusiasts would appreciate South Cape Beach State Park in Edgartown, where sunbathing, fishing, swimming and hiking are popular pastimes.
